Koodugal – கூடுகள் (NEST – Network for Environment sustainability Trust) as an unified team is trying to recreate, reduce and solve. By recreating a space for sparrow in your homes we are trying to save a species on the verge of extinction and thereby can balance the food chain.
We are also focus on:
In 2014, the Journey started as a member of CARE – the Eco Club of Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Sriperumbudur, supported by EMAI – Trust for Environment Monitoring and Action Initiating. We started a survey to identify areas in Chennai where House sparrow population is still existing. Based on the survey it was found that sparrow population is thriving in North Madras (Thiruvottiyur, Tondiarpet, Washermanpet, Royapuram etc.,) and also in pockets of Chintadripet, Triplicane, Urapakkam, T.Nagar, Velachery, Poonamallee, Perambur, ECR, Adyar, Pattinapakkam, Tambaram.
A step further, the members of EMAI and CARE started distributing nest boxes specially designed for House sparrow nesting and also deter crows from taking away eggs from the nest. The result was very promising as the nest boxes were immediately adopted by the House sparrows. The public was also eagerly willing to have the nest boxes in their houses.

By recreating a space for sparrow in your homes we are trying to save a species on the verge of extinction and thereby can balance the food chain. By reducing the plastic waste, we can make this earth a better place to live. And finally, we have a solution to address both water scarcity and prevention of young children falling inside bore well. At large, koodugal tries to restore our mother nature thereby can preserve the planet. It is made possible only with the support of people like you. We extend our gratitude to people and volunteers who are the pillars of koodugal in achieving the target.
A small step but a giant leap in conservation of Sparrows. Sparrow plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance in food chain. Most people think that cell phone towers had led to drastic decline in sparrow count. This is just a MYTH! Trendy Urban lifestyle is the crucial cause of Drastic decline in the count of Sparrows, not only because of high frequency cell phone towers. The prime intention of KOODUGAL – கூடுகள் (NEST – Network for Environment Sustainability Trust) is refurbishing the livelihood of Sparrows, by distributing birdhouse to the Eco lovers through the schools. In North Chennai, a small initiative by our community has given admirable results on Sparrow count. So far, we have organised few workshops, exhibition in wildlife photography and also awareness programs to emphasise the importance of sparrow in human’s life and environment.

Ms. Shanthini, Co-founder and Managing trustee, Koodugal, Assistant Professor in JNN Institute of Engineering and Mother of two, I want to motivate younger minds to REDUCE PLASTICS and encourage them to eat healthy foods. We organized an event Reduce Plastics for 4 months we collected 9000 used waste plastic pens from various sources like schools, neighbours etc., In these pens we made 300 pen stands and given an awareness of using ink pens then we give that pen stands along with one ink pen to every school where we are collected. We made cloth banner instead of using printed plastics banners for this event. Koodugal always gives eco-friendly gifts to encourage others to do. It’s one of the ways to REDUCE PLASTICS Moreover it creates great awareness among younger minds. Every handmade gift needs more patience and concentration.
